Alpha Chi Omega can thank Fay Barnaby Kent (Delta, Allegheny College) for encouraging the Fraternity’s support of MacDowell and, in particular, the construction and ongoing support of Star Studio there. Fay had been a pupil of Edward MacDowell and served as a national vice president of the Fraternity from 1909-1915. Edward MacDowell’s wife, Marian, was an honorary member of the Zeta chapter at the New England Conservatory.
Fay was charged with soliciting funds for the creation of a studio at MacDowell, and, according to The History of Alpha Chi Omega Fraternity, 1885-1948, “The generous and immediate response of the chapters resulted in the erection of Star Studio, which was ready for occupancy in 1911.”
Fay continued to be an avid supporter and advocate of MacDowell. The 1935 edition of Alpha Chi Omega’s history states: “She lamented in 1915 that no Alpha Chi Omega had yet used the studio. ‘Have we no writers, painters, sculptors or composers who could do something in that wonderful atmosphere?’” Fortunately, soon after this both Helen Bailey (Alpha Epsilon, University of Pennsylvania) and Elthea Snider Turner (Gamma, Northwestern University) had the opportunity to pursue their creativity in Star Studio.
Fay was responsible for the establishment of Alpha Chi Omega’s MacDowell Month in 1961, which was the centennial of Edward MacDowell’s 1861 birth. This month honors our Founders’ heritage as musicians and encourages sisters to enjoy the arts. In 1964, she was honored with Alpha Chi Omega’s Award of Achievement. In her New Jersey community, Fay was known as a dedicated supporter of the arts. She founded and served as director of a fine arts institute for 30 years – where she brought talented faculty from New York to provide instruction in music, drama and dance. A longtime piano teacher, she also served as the organist and choir director for her church for more than 50 years.
Fay Barnaby Kent passed away in 1976.

February's MacDowell Month is the perfect opportunity for sisters to learn about a champion like Fay as we continue to celebrate the arts in our own lives. Her story is a reminder of Alpha Chi Omega's rich history in and appreciation for the arts.
